Our adopted dog sucess story

We adopted a beautiful brown border collie, Sunday, from PetSmart a few weeks before our wedding and just a few weeks after moving into our first new home.

Since our engagement six months earlier, my husband had been pestering me to get a dog until  I had snapped and said,  "No dogs until six months after the wedding."  He submitted to Bridezilla and gave up the subject.

We were at PetSmart  getting cat food.  We were in line paying when I remembered something we needed and stumbled on Sunday in the back.  I fell in love and had 20 minutes till the store closed to decide to adopt her and grab all the puppy supplies we needed.  We brought her home and she almost immediately wet our brand new carpet several times.  I hate to say we almost took her back with all the stress.  Luckily the wedding went through and the messes cleaned up easily.  Now Sunday is the center of our lives.

She had been given up due to all her energy.  Which we saw right away.  But we walked her regularly and gave her lots of toys.  We took her to training and gave her some time to grow up.  Now she is an AKC canine good citizen certified dog and is in training to be a therapy dog in nursing homes and a R.E.A.D dog to help kids in elementary school.  Working tires her out.  Training has taught her positive ways to get attention and all the love we have has made her secure enough to be herself.  She brings a lot of joy to the school she works at, loves kids and receives compliments every where she goes.  Adopting this happy puppy was the best wedding gift my husband and I gave each other and started our life together with a big furry ball of pure love.

Update from Ronnie, adopted 11-29-08

Hello to all my friends at HSOY,
Ronnie here, along with a play-date of mine, Scooter. Here's a picture of us playing at my home one afternoon. When Scooter and I are not playing, we like to look out the window to see who is passing by. Of course I also have my "sister" Charlotte to play with all the time. Charlotte loves me very much and always brings my toys to me

I love napping on the sofa with my dad.

It has been almost 6 months now since I adopted my new family, and wow do I feel loved. My new "mom" and "dad" are retired so they spend lots of time with me and take me with them places too as long as I can be walked on my leash. So I have got to visit lots of cool places.

My parents like to go places in our "rolling home", a very large motorhome. We left Arizona in April headed for Charlotte, North Carolina. On our way, we stopped in Tucson, Arizona and visited Saguaro National Park then to White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. I was amazed to see the big white sand dunes, and the watching children ride plastic sleds down the tall dunes. Next we went to the Space Center at Houston, Texas and the beach at Galveston, Texas where I walked with my dad.

I was surprised as I watched my geographical environment change from cactus and rock to lots of tall trees and grass. We arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina almost 3 weeks ago now. All the green grass in our yard here was confusing to me, and I preferred at first to walk on the pavement when I took my several walks a day. Now I am more adjusted to the grass and found out that it is relaxing to lie down upon. Mom and dad are taking me to Ohio on June 1 to meet the rest of my new family until early July (mom and dad must have a lot of family for me to meet). I am going to have a real treat when we visit Nova Scotia, Canada. I'll get to see some of our neighbors from Quartzsite, AZ, there. After we visit Canada, we head for Tennessee for a month before we start our journey back to Quartzsite, AZ, for the winter. By the time I get back west, I will be a well-traveled guy.

As you can see, I have a very fun and loving life now, and hope that all my friends from HSOY find good homes too. Me and my family think of you all often. Take care and maybe I can come by and say hello when we visit Yuma this coming winter.

Azure Update

I adopted this beautiful girl Azure. It took me almost a week to find a really good name to match her …so I made it easy on me and my family and we just call her baby blue or just blue for short. I think when I saw Azure it was love at first sight. Her shiny blue coat and cute face just screamed out to me "Take me home!"
Almost every day for a week I went to go see her, I tried to get to know her a little more. It took me almost two weeks to adopt her (I found out she was on the list to be euthanized). She’s a great joy , she was a little shy coming home and she had just gotten spayed when we got her..she has fully recovered and loves to go everywhere with me. She loves to play with other dogs and even cats, Blue loves to wrestle with my little brother, her favorite places are all parks and the river. I think her favorite thing to do is right after a nice swim in the Colorado River is to roll around in the nice cool grass.

She is such a nice loving dog and I am soooo happy with her.

Thank you guys so much for helping me find her.

Five pets adopted from HSOY

Hello,

In the past year my husband and I have adopted five animals from your facility. Four of which are dogs two males and two females whose names are Rusty, Boomer, Sophie and Porsha. Also we adopted a cat that we named Misha. I would like to personally thank everyone at the Humane Society of Yuma for helping us find the perfect additions to our family. Our eight month old daughter loves them all and they love her just as much. They are all doing extremely well and make our family complete.

Thank you again!
Gary

Hello from Ronnie

Hello to all my friends and pooches at the HSOY. I have been very busy since I adopted a new family during the HSOY adoption event at Pet Smart in Yuma on Saturday November 29.
My new parents are Brenda and Bob and they think I am adorable because I have been busy showing them how sweet I am. First things first. On Monday, mom and dad took me to a veterinarian who checked me over from head to toe. He said I do not have any heart worms or fecal worms, but I do have an upper respiratory infection and that my incision from where HSOY spayed me had become infected. He wants my stitches to stay in a few extra days because of the infection, then mom and dad will take me back for a re-check and have the stitches removed. The doctor has fixed me up with some medicines and said I should be is top shape in a few days.
I have been busy showing my new family that I am housebroken and have been a very good boy about going to the door and telling them I need to go outside to potty. I also have shown them that I don’t bark when someone knocks on our door or another dog goes by. That makes mom and dad very happy.
They were most surprised when I showed them that I know how to sit up when they offer me a doggie treat, and when I am hungry I will use my nose to push my food bowl over to them.
Mom and dad bought me a new collar, halter collar and leash, a new blue bed. My new sister, Charlotte, a Labrador retriever, thinks I am OK! She lets me sit down beside her and play with her toys. She didn’t even mind when I ate from her food bowl too. Charlotte has lots of toys to play with but my parents bought me some toys that are just my size.
Well, better go for now. Mom and dad want to take me for a walk and snuggle me some more. They have given me lots of hugs and kisses since I adopted them and I think we are going to be a wonderful happy family together because mom and dad love me so much. I miss my canine friends at HSOY and hope that they find a family who loves them too.

Zukko

Good Morning!

We adopted a little 4 month old Pitbull in June this year. When we got him his name was Hooch but we renamed him Zukko. He has come a long way since we first got him. He had been abused previously and was deathly terrified of plastic bags but we have finally broke him of his fear. He had been at the shelter just a few days when we picked him up but he is doing amazingly well!

We have another pit bull, he was 4 when we got Zukko and they are the best of friends! (see attached)

We just wanted to thank you for your efforts and let you guys know what a great job you all have done.

Alice

Hi Linda, On October 16th this year we adopted a little dog who HSOY called Buttons, we now call her Alice and she now knows her name as that. She had been in the kennel for about three weeks when we arrived. Why no-one had claimed her we do not know, except she was meant for us. What a dog!

She was a stray so we didn't know to expect anything but this dog was a joy from the beginning. She does not bark except when greatly provoked, she goes all nite under our bed and has never messed in the house once. She eats Science Diet and loves Dog Bones for treats.

We do walk her daily for our exercise and she is more courteous than most dogs on leash out there. In other words, she is Great!! Not by our doing, but are we happy. Also she is gentle and sweet spirited with my 98 years old father who lives with us. She is all and more that we had hoped for and she seems very happy with us and our livestyle. Thank you for keeping her for us.

Very sincerely,
David Keller
