So here's an update on Roxy after two weeks.

Day one she was still really unsure about where she was. She just slept in her bed all night and didn't really move. Hammy was very curious and tried to play with her, but she wanted nothing to do with any of it.

Day two we went to the dog park. Hammy of course went tearing into the park barking like "HEY I'm here!" as always, Roxy just stood there for a minute and then BAM! took off and went up to everyone! She played with all the dogs, and people and just ran and ran! It was like YAY!!! Now she just LOOOOVES the park!

It took her a while to come out of her shyness shell, but now, she gets so excited when I pull out her leash to go for a walk! Yes, that's right! HER LEASH! We have successfully learned how to walk on a leash!

Yesterday she learned how to sit and today she learned how to lay down. She's really smart! It takes her a minute to figure out how to get the treat, but once she does, she's all over it!

Her and Hammy have totally become BFF's! They just play and play! Chase eachother around the house, tug of war with the toys, you name it!

She's really become a part of my family and she's sooo fun! Thanks for everything and we will definately keep you posted!

Here's some pics!

Courtney, Hammy & Roxy

Henry

Hi! On 8-20-09 I adopted a kitten. I named him Henry. He fits so well into our lifestyle. We are retired and have lots of time to spend with him. We also have a sweet dog that likes him, too. I am attaching a few photos! How blessed we all are to have each other. We have the opportunity to give him a great life. He gives us so much enjoyment and love!
How sad that so many animals don't get a loving home and the opportunity to bring so much love and entertainment!! She is adjusting to her new home and Rodie, our Australian Cattle Dog. She went to our local vet for her wellness checkup and licensing on Tuesday. She passed with flying colors. Right now their is a little people possessiveness between Rodie and Blue, but they will work that out in time. Such a smart little girl, housebroke and already knows how to use the doggie doors to go in and out. She loves to go for rides in the truck. Rodie and Blue managed to share the space in the back seat with no tiffs. color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 10pt;">I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on our adoption of our wonderful puppy Kayla. We went to your shelter and looked at several of the dogs and puppies that you had there and we fell in love with one adorable puppy and adopted her on July 3, 2009. Her name is Kayla. She is the absolutely best puppy in Yuma. She is very smart, was house broke in 1 day. She is very lovable and playful. Kayla is a wonderful addition to our family. She did not replace my Rottweiler who passed away on June 20, 2009. She was 13 years old and we had her since she was six weeks old. Kayla was a wonderful addition to help fill the void since the passing of KD. My other dog Lacey who we also had since a puppy also 13 years old passed away last Friday July 24th and Kayla is making the passing of both of my long term companions much better. We look forward to having Kayla in our family for a very long time. Kayla enjoys playing in her wading pool, tug-a-war, and going for car rides to the park and her favorite store, Pet Smart. She also loves playing fetch.

Thank you for having Kayla available for us to adopt. We are truly enjoying her.

The Keeters,

Helen, Larry and Jake and of course Kayla

Carrie Anne's Story

In the span of over forty years, we have owned some wonderful dogs, some purebred, some not. But when our beloved American Eskimo, Truman, died the void was especially severe. We began to explore rescue sites, and it became very clear very fast there were so many wonderful dogs in need of forever homes. We instinctively knew that from that moment on, we would have as many rescues as we could afford and could take care of.

That number for us is three dogs. So when we lost our last rescue dog due to kidney disease, and we were again down to two, the unspoken word was we would make room for one more. My husband is especially fond of whippets and whippet mixes. We already have a wonderful whippet mix named Lucy who is smart, graceful and a real diva. Of course, she was a rescue, and we took her on with her broken leg still in a cast.

Through Petfinder.Com we located a whippet mix at the Yuma Humane Society . This little girl had already experienced more than any one- year old should. She gave birth to eight babies at YHS, and was very thin and unhappy. Enter her angel foster mom, Loma Clark. Loma knew her chances and her babies’ chances at a forever home would be greatly increased if she could give little Carrie Anne a fresh start. Loma took her home and cared for her and her babies, until her babies were old enough to be adopted and Carrie Anne was much stronger and happier.

We sent a couple of e-mails to Loma, and she responded with everything she knew about Carrie Anne. It would be a 240 mile each way trip to Yuma, but we decided to make a weekend of it. We were to meet Loma and Carrie Anne at PetSmart at high noon. We had our dogs with us (so they could think this was THEIR idea).

We saw Loma and Carrie Anne get out of the van. Carrie Anne was an odd site – she was wearing her little Harley Davidson jacket (a brave front) but she looked very frightened and vulnerable. Loma invited us to walk her around the parking lot with our two kids. Our American Staffordshire/Dalmatian mix, Rocky, was pretty intrigued at the prospect of a new girlfriend, but Lucy was indignant. Carrie Anne was neither friendly, nor unfriendly. It was almost like she didn’t care anymore – just do with me what you must.

No time to think this over. There would be no driving back to Yuma again. My husband looked at me, and I looked at him. He was the first to say, “Let’s do it!” That was a hard moment for Loma. She had become very attached in the six weeks she had cared for Carrie Anne and her babies. We made a promise that we would take very good care of her. She is much braver than I.

I drove home and my husband held her all the way. That probably would have been enough to seal the permanent bond, but when he gave her a soft taco at Taco Bell – that was it!!! (It was gone in an instant – including the lettuce!) He was her new hero. During that trip home, we decided we would have to change her name, since our youngest daughter’s name is Carrie Ann. But keeping it in the family, we named her after my now-deceased mother, who was small, vulnerable, and also had great potential. We called her “Jessie” all the way home.

It took awhile before she was comfortable letting my husband of her sight. Now she has decided she can spare the time to cuddle with me also, but I may always be second. But as I write this, she is sitting right beside me. She is so special in every way. You can see the love and gratitude on her face every day! She wakes up happy, goes to sleep happy, and in between, plays with her brother and sister, and looks for more to eat!

I cannot even begin to tell you how much love and respect we have for Loma, and the many others like her who volunteer their time and attention to these special kids. To love, care for, and be able to let go of these needy ones takes a special person. As for us, our day to day reward is that our three kids think all dogs live like this!

She had been given up due to all her energy. Which we saw right away. But we walked her regularly and gave her lots of toys. We took her to training and gave her some time to grow up. Now she is an AKC canine good citizen certified dog and is in training to be a therapy dog in nursing homes and a R.E.A.D dog to help kids in elementary school. Working tires her out. Training has taught her positive ways to get attention and all the love we have has made her secure enough to be herself. She brings a lot of joy to the school she works at, loves kids and receives compliments every where she goes. Adopting this happy puppy was the best wedding gift my husband and I gave each other and started our life together with a big furry ball of pure love.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: verdana; Here's a picture of us playing at my home one afternoon. When Scooter and I are not playing, we like to look out the window to see who is passing by. Of course I also have my "sister" Charlotte to play with all the time. Charlotte loves me very much and always brings my toys to me

I love napping on the sofa with my dad.

It has been almost 6 months now since I adopted my new family, and wow do I feel loved. My new "mom" and "dad" are retired so they spend lots of time with me and take me with them places too as long as I can be walked on my leash. So I have got to visit lots of cool places.

My parents like to go places in our "rolling home", a very large motorhome. We left Arizona in April headed for Charlotte, North Carolina. On our way, we stopped in Tucson, Arizona and visited Saguaro National Park then to White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. I was amazed to see the big white sand dunes, and the watching children ride plastic sleds down the tall dunes. Next we went to the Space Center at Houston, Texas and the beach at Galveston, Texas where I walked with my dad.

I was surprised as I watched my geographical environment change from cactus and rock to lots of tall trees and grass. We arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina almost 3 weeks ago now. All the green grass in our yard here was confusing to me, and I preferred at first to walk on the pavement when I took my several walks a day. Now I am more adjusted to the grass and found out that it is relaxing to lie down upon. Mom and dad are taking me to Ohio on June 1 to meet the rest of my new family until early July (mom and dad must have a lot of family for me to meet). I am going to have a real treat when we visit Nova Scotia, Canada. I'll get to see some of our neighbors from Quartzsite, AZ, there. After we visit Canada, we head for Tennessee for a month before we start our journey back to Quartzsite, AZ, for the winter. By the time I get back west, I will be a well-traveled guy.

As you can see, I have a very fun and loving life now, and hope that all my friends from HSOY find good homes too. Me and my family think of you all often. Take care and maybe I can come by and say hello when we visit Yuma this coming winter.

Ronnie

Azure Update

I adopted this beautiful girl Azure. It took me almost a week to find a really good name to match her …so I made it easy on me and my family and we just call her baby blue or just blue for short. I think when I saw Azure it was love at first sight. Her shiny blue coat and cute face just screamed out to me "Take me home!"
Almost every day for a week I went to go see her, I tried to get to know her a little more. It took me almost two weeks to adopt her (I found out she was on the list to be euthanized). She’s a great joy , she was a little shy coming home and she had just gotten spayed when we got her..she has fully recovered and loves to go everywhere with me. She loves to play with other dogs and even cats, Blue loves to wrestle with my little brother, her favorite places are all parks and the river. I think her favorite thing to do is right after a nice swim in the Colorado River is to roll around in the nice cool grass.

She is such a nice loving dog and I am soooo happy with her.

Thank you guys so much for helping me find her.

Deziree Paz--

Five pets adopted from HSOY

Hello,

In the past year my husband and I have adopted five animals from your facility. Four of which are dogs two males and two females whose names are Rusty, Boomer, Sophie and Porsha. Also we adopted a cat that we named Misha. I would like to personally thank everyone at the Humane Society of Yuma for helping us find the perfect additions to our family. Our eight month old daughter loves them all and they love her just as much. They are all doing extremely well and make our family complete.

Thank you again!
Gary

Hello from Ronnie

Hello to all my friends and pooches at the HSOY. I have been very busy since I adopted a new family during the HSOY adoption event at Pet Smart in Yuma on Saturday November 29.
My new parents are Brenda and Bob and they think I am adorable because I have been busy showing them how sweet I am. First things first. On Monday, mom and dad took me to a veterinarian who checked me over from head to toe. He said I do not have any heart worms or fecal worms, but I do have an upper respiratory infection and that my incision from where HSOY spayed me had become infected. He wants my stitches to stay in a few extra days because of the infection, then mom and dad will take me back for a re-check and have the stitches removed. The doctor has fixed me up with some medicines and said I should be is top shape in a few days.
I have been busy showing my new family that I am housebroken and have been a very good boy about going to the door and telling them I need to go outside to potty. I also have shown them that I don’t bark when someone knocks on our door or another dog goes by. That makes mom and dad very happy.
They were most surprised when I showed them that I know how to sit up when they offer me a doggie treat, and when I am hungry I will use my nose to push my food bowl over to them.
Mom and dad bought me a new collar, halter collar and leash, a new blue bed. My new sister, Charlotte, a Labrador retriever, thinks I am OK! She lets me sit down beside her and play with her toys. She didn’t even mind when I ate from her food bowl too. Charlotte has lots of toys to play with but my parents bought me some toys that are just my size.
Well, better go for now. Mom and dad want to take me for a walk and snuggle me some more. They have given me lots of hugs and kisses since I adopted them and I think we are going to be a wonderful happy family together because mom and dad love me so much. I miss my canine friends at HSOY and hope that they find a family who loves them too.

Zukko

Good Morning!

We adopted a little 4 month old Pitbull in June this year. She had been in the kennel for about three weeks when we arrived. Why no-one had claimed her we do not know, except she was meant for us. What a dog!

She was a stray so we didn't know to expect anything but this dog was a joy from the beginning. She does not bark except when greatly provoked, she goes all nite under our bed and has never messed in the house once. She eats Science Diet and loves Dog Bones for treats.

We do walk her daily for our exercise and she is more courteous than most dogs on leash out there. In other words, she is Great!! Not by our doing, but are we happy. Also she is gentle and sweet spirited with my 98 years old father who lives with us. She is all and more that we had hoped for and she seems very happy with us and our livestyle. Thank you for keeping her for us.

Very sincerely,
David Keller
PS. The small black dog was called "Blackie" we named him Ollie and we adopted him last November.
He was the mascot dog for the opening of the thrift shop at the swap meet. We had recently lost our beloved 10 year old lab and were still missing him SO not in the mind frame to adopt a pet. However Ollie bonded with My husband and I at the swap meet even though we tried to keep our distance. Later that day with thoughts of that little black dog nagging at me I picked up our 2 kids from school and Raymond ( in the picture) started saying "I know we all miss Rufie but surely we have room on another dog especially since Ms. Elkie brought the neatest little black dog to our school assembly today." I called Elkie and said "we want that little dog". He is the cutesiest thing with the most personality and moved right in. Then in July(2008) one week before we went out of town for a week Elkie phoned and asked us if we were still missing a "big dog" in our lives. I said yes, so we left the town thrift shop where we were helping to set up- went right down to the shelter to meet Lucas- the golden retriever in the photo. The whole way over to the shelter my husband was saying " now you know this isn't the greatest timing- right?" Well Lucas moved in, settled in, adapted to the pet sitter we had hired and has become more entrenched in our lives since July. The little tan dog was "re -homed" from a neighbour- she was used to being part of a pack and is much happier since we adopted her two buddies. The dogs are kept company by 3 indoor cats ( one a shelter pet, the other two were side of the road foundlings) and our bird. As you can see there is a reason my furniture is shabby- AND dark colored!

Kimberley Dierdorf

Pixie

Hi!

This is Sheryn and Richie Wright, and we are the proud parents of our adopted little toy poodle, PIXIE.

She has been with us a little over a month now at 4 months old, and we are thoroughly enjoying her. Whilst I'm responsible for providing
food, excrement disposal, healthcare, and feet to pounce in the middle
of the night, they seem to have set their own obligations as well!
For instance, every night they journey into my room from their game of
Predator and Prey to "tuck me into bed". After I begin dozing away, I
can, at times, feel the pressure rise off of whatever area they were
laying on to resume their game. It's quite hysterical. They also
play greeter at the door after my long days of teaching and
extracurriculars. Further, I may wake from sleep or naps to a nice
grooming on my legs and arms (and sometimes armpits, though we are
trying to curtail such unbecoming activities). In a few months, they
will help me break-in our newly built house in Somerton!

And just a PS: If you are leery of the "stray" label placed on kittens
and cats, let my testimonial ease your fears: Mila and Ollie were
brought into the Humane Society as strays.

Dita on the Road (an update)

Hey, it’s me, Dita, with an update on my life now. I’m a traveling dog and lovin it! Who would have thought from just a real mess emotionally that I would be livin the high life. Woof woof.
Plus I haven’t had to be in those extreme hot temperatures in Yuma even tho I have black fur I like to lay in the sun. Gosh we got in this house on wheels and off we went in June. We lived a little bit south of Flagstaff out in the trees and the very cool air for a couple weeks, then off to Albuqueruqe we went. That’s just a nice place to park your house for awhile.
Then off we went and in a couple days we were in a beautiful place called Angel Canyon where thousands of animals have their forever home. Gosh it’s pretty with tall red rocks and things I’d never seen before. I’m such a good dog now that can stay home for hours and guard the place and don’t get into a bit of trouble.
Well, a couple times there was something really really good smelling in the garbage and I had to check that out. I got the feeling they weren’t so happy when they came home that day. Now I’m in Salt Lake City and it’s just busy busy and noisey. AND all these kids??? I don’t think I like them. I’m trying but they just want to be pushy and pat me on the head.

So again it’s a big “I appreciate you Mike for calling and telling my family I was just a mess and needed help”. Never did I think my life would again have meaning and that I would be having so much fun. I’m spoiled to the max and I deserve it!

-Dita

Sadie Doll

Here is a photo of my little "Sadie Doll" setting on one of my small Persian rugs. We adopted a baby lab mix puppy from the shelter full of energy and heart and we named him Widget. He quickly won over the hearts of his new family, and big momma dog Willow (the kitties took a little longer to come around but they now roll on the ground and play right along with him as though he were one of them.).

He is an extremely smart dog becoming fully potty trained with in two weeks after we rescued him making him only 10 weeks old. By the time he was 4 months old he learned sit, shake, stay, and talking (barking when asked). By the time he was 25 weeks old he learned how to open up his kennal as well as sliding glass doors. I have NEVER had a smarter dog. He is truly amazing.

By the time he was 8 months old, my husband and I had our first baby and were so nervous how such a young and active dog would cope with our very new and very delicate addition. When we brought home our son, Widget approached with a wagging tail yet amazingly very slow as though he knew how delicate the baby was. And every day he approaches the baby in my lap in the very same way with slow moves, a wagging tail, and plenty of soft kisses. He really is the sweetest, most amazing dog I have ever met.

He is now a little over 1 year old standing tall and fit weighing in at nearly 75lbs, we're anticipating maybe another inch in height, he's a big boy and we love it! His name was Charlie, and the note on the window said he was full of energy. He is a 5 1/2 months old Sealpoint Siamese. In the three weeks that he has been in our family he has taken over like he was born here. He is a delightful little terror. He has also learned to get along with our 17 year old Siamese male. We love him already, and couldn't even dream of being without him.

We are so happy that we were able to rescue him. He had been there for over a month when we found him. By the way, you might find this interesting. Our 17 year old male, named Handsome, was also adopted from the Humane Society in 1991, along with his sister who passed away about a month ago.

We have also adopted a beautiful long haired German Shepherd from the same place about 2 years ago. Another wonderful addition to our family.

We are firm believers in adopting and rescuing pets. We also have two Greyhounds that we adopted in Tucson from the Greyhound Adoption League. And we are avid supporters of the Humane Society.

Throughout our life, adopting and raising these wonderful creatures, we have never had one moment of regret. We have loved them one and all without exception. They have always been, and always will be, our family.
Thank you for all that you do. We know that your job is enormous and never-ending. We will continue to help support the Humane Society as long as we live. All that these animals need is someone to love them and they respond so quickly. Keep up the good work.
                 Thank you,
--
Dave & Shirley

Our new love

Received March 11

We adopted Maggie about 6 weeks ago. She is a Terrier mix. A Cairn, I think. Her name was Sassafras. She had been adopted and returned the morning I was there.

It was Love at first sight. She was a little scared in the car on the way home. She still doesn't like the car but is getting better all the time. She is so smart and obedient. At one time she has been well trained. She has become the love of our lives.

She has now completed all of her procedures and trips to the vet for an ear infection and worms. Today is time for a bath and a haircut as soon as I can find a place with time to trim her. Thank you and all your workers at Yuma Shelter for all the care and attention they provide and a place where you can find such great companions.

Sincerely, Shirley Antrobus

Update Received March 26

We are returning to Washington State next week and taking Maggie with us. She has gotten better about riding in the car. Still not her favorite place but at least she no longer shakes the whole time she in it. I'm looking forward to seeing her reaction to all the grass we have there because she loves the few patches she finds here. I have attached a picture of her. The only one I have because the flash sent her under the bed and I haven't tried it again. Thanks again for all your hard work for the animals of Yuma.

Shirley Antrobus
